June 22, 2019
Wow! Our first day couldn't have gone better! Students were up by 9:00am and had a hearty breakfast at the hotel. By 10:00am we were on our tour bus learning about the island of Singapore. Singapore is fairly small, roughly the same size as New York, however, with a population of only 5.7 million people. The culture is rich with Chinese, Malay, and Indian influences which makes for a great food experience! The Singaporean people have three basic resources (sun, people, and sea port) and everything else they need must be imported (e.g. the port).
After a brief drive through the Indian and Malay districts we stopped at one of Singapore's most iconic sights, the Merlion. From there we were able to see the 18 super trees, the three towers (Marina Bay Sands Hotel), and the Singapore Flyer (a massive ferris wheel). After photo ops in this area, we went to Chinatown and had lunch in the Maxwell Hawker Center, an open air food market with traditional grub. Some students were more adventurous than others in their food choices, but the overall culture was experienced by all. From there we walked through Bhudda Tooth Relic Temple just as prayer time was beginning. We were able to watch and take photos. Before heading back to the hotel, we had just enough time for some shopping in the street market of Chinatown. This was a very successful day one and we are very proud of the attitude, resilience, and overall engagement of this group!
Remember-tomorrow we leave for Bhutan at 6:00am Singapore time. Wireless access AND phone communication will be less reliable while we are there. We will update the blog as we are able so check back frequently.

We have arrived!!
After a long flight, we have arrived in Singapore! Despite exhaustion and the humidity, all are well and spirits are high. The students did a great job getting through immigration and collecting baggage at the airport, not a single complaint, to us at least. Tomorrow we will embark on a five hour city tour and enjoy some local food! Off to bed!
